Exceptional Mljet’s cultural and historical heritage is developing in an unbroken sequence from the time of the Illyrian tribes, over the time of Roman Empire and Republic of Dubrovnik, to the present day.
National Park Mljet isnorthwestern part of the island of Mljet. It encompasses around 5000 hectares of protected land and surrounding sea and represents the first institutionalized attempt to protect an original ecosystem on the Adriatic. Its outer coast, open to the south, it’s extremely steep and full of impressive caves, while the coast facing the mainland, open to the north, is lower and more approachable. The system of the Great and Little Lakes represents a unique geological and oceanographic phenomenon of worldwide importance. The St. Mary Island, on the Great Lake with a Benedictine monastery and church of the 12th century, along with the Roman palace in Polace are places to see.
